The Bergmeister papilla was discovered incidentally during a routine eye examination in a 38-year-old woman. The visual acuity of the patient was 20/20 in both eyes. The white arrows on the color photograph, multicolor imaging, and OCT indicate the Bergmeister papilla. It appears gray-white on the color photograph and multicolor imaging. OCT shows the Bergmeister papilla as a hyperreflective tissue.
The Bergmeister papilla originates from the center of the optic disc, consists of a small tuft of fibrous tissue, and represents a remnant of the fetal hyaloid artery. It is not known to cause any visual impairment; it appears as a linear, gray structure anterior to the optic disc.
